Nobody is coming
“If it is to be, it’s up to me” is a realization to which most people will come eventually. Time and time again, especially when engaged in weight loss activities, people seem to think that there is a quick fix approach somewhere out there. And sadly, those people are not alone, as their beliefs are fueled by various tabloids offering the latest fad diet that promises quick and lasting results without effort. “Eat what you want, feel great, and lose weight” is often heard. Or, “With only 3 minutes of workout per day you will get your dream body by summer!”.
Have you ever wondered how – in all reality – effortless weight loss is supposed to happen? Do you know of any life change you ever wanted to make that was without effort? I don’t think so; but you are welcome to prove me wrong.
It’s effortless – or is it?
Let’s look back at reasons we might be fat in the first place: We ate too much and moved too little. That said, even gaining weight is not effortless, as we have to put in the effort to eat more and decide to move less.
These decisions, however, might have different reasons and could likely be explained by our emotional situation at the time. Now, picture yourself with that same old emotional stance you had when you decided to let yourself go fat: Can you really believe that you could effortlessly lose weight when your state of mind has gotten you into this predicament to begin with? Of course, any ad geared towards your mindset will jump right out at you, screaming at you “buy me!, use me!, get thin with me!”. Often these products come with a hefty price tag only to help their inventors – not you.
With the state of mind being the same as it was when we got fat, then, we buy into “effortless promises” and are likely to fail to produce the expected results, sending our sense of self-worth further down the tubes.
What we need is, then, a change in attitude towards reliance on ourselves and not relying on others – or better, what others try to tell us in terms of effortlessness on our part.
Losing weight is not effortless. It does take a tremendous amount of effort – and it is all up to you. And, because it is up to you, no one else can do it for you; no tabloid magazine, no crazy infomercial product, no fad diet.
Only you!
No-one can, for example, do the push-ups for you if it is you that wants the results. And, even if you know technically how to do twenty push-ups, you will not be able to do them right away; you will have to pay the price of doing them – until you get there.
You will simply have to start from where you are now and go from there.
We often get discouraged if something does not work right away as we lack the patience and the understanding that we will have to walk the walk ourselves. Gaining weight took time, and losing it will take time and effort as well! You have to work towards that change inside your head that enables you to think that you control your own weight loss ideas – and nobody else but you; you have to base your new found self-efficacy on weight loss principles, and not on magazines, infomercials, and other people’s ideas.
“If it is to be, it’s up to me!” – because nobody and nothing will do it for you.
My Goal
My goal as a coach is to help you become more aware of that all you need to reach your goals in life is already in you; coaching only draws it out, makes you more aware of the things you could do, and empowers you with more self-responsibility. On top of that, I’ll be happy to give you an extra dose of accountability throughout the coaching relationship.
